Google plans data center investment in Torsboda – strengthening Västernorrland’s position as a tech and innovation hub

Google plans to establish a data center at Torsboda Industrial Park.

The announcement that Google plans to establish a data center in Torsboda marks a major milestone for Västernorrland and confirms the region’s growing attractiveness for international investment.

The investment represents not only a significant financial commitment and the creation of new jobs, but also new opportunities for innovation, skills development, and long-term regional growth.

“This is a historic announcement for Västernorrland. The fact that one of the world’s most influential technology companies has chosen to invest here further strengthens the region’s reputation as an attractive location for the industries of the future, digital transformation, and AI development,” says Magnus Viström, Head of High Coast Invest at BizMaker.

In addition to the data center, which is expected to create at least 500 direct jobs once fully operational, Google plans to invest SEK 924 million in various community initiatives. At the same time, collaboration efforts focused on innovation, education, and societal development will be launched together with municipalities, academia, and regional development organizations.

Before the transaction can be completed, approvals are required from the municipal councils of Sundsvall and Timrå. Several permits and regulatory reviews must also be completed, including those related to environmental impact, building permits, energy supply, and the Swedish Inspectorate of Strategic Products. If all approvals proceed according to plan, the goal is to finalize the transaction during the autumn.

“We are very positive about the opportunities this announcement creates for collaboration between industry, academia, and the region’s innovation ecosystem. It will further strengthen our long-term efforts in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship within AI and technology, while also increasing the region’s attractiveness for future investments,” says Magnus Viström.

In recent years, Västernorrland has strengthened its position as a destination for sustainable industrial investments, thanks to access to fossil-free energy, competitive conditions for business establishment, and a rapidly growing innovation ecosystem.

“We already have strong momentum in the region, with investments in sectors such as data centers, tourism, foodtech, hydrogen, and e-fuels. Google’s planned investment adds another important piece to the puzzle, helping to expand our ecosystem and create new opportunities for companies looking to grow and establish operations here,” says Magnus Viström.
