Agtira, the Härnösand-based foodtech company and Sweden’s largest producer of cucumbers, has signed a Letter of Intent with Dutch GreenV to develop a new generation of modern, illuminated greenhouse facilities in Sweden. The plans include approximately five hectares of greenhouse cultivation in Härnösand, further strengthening the region’s position in the future of sustainable food production.
As a first step, the companies will evaluate the establishment of around five hectares of illuminated greenhouse cultivation in Härnösand and two hectares in Helsingborg. At the same time, they aim to develop a scalable model for future expansion to additional locations across Sweden.
The planned investment aligns closely with the shared vision emerging in Västernorrland to develop High Coast Food Valley – a strong ecosystem for the future of food production.
– Across Västernorrland, municipalities, local and international companies, and academia are working together to unlock the potential of industrial by-products and excess heat through industrial symbiosis. By making better use of existing resources, we are strengthening the region’s position in the future of food production. Investments like this show that we already have many of the conditions needed to attract further investment and build on the strengths that make our region competitive, says Bengt Högberg, Investment Advisor at High Coast Invest.
The project is another example of how Västernorrland continues to attract investments and international partnerships within the food sector of the future. The region offers many of the conditions sought by companies looking to grow and establish new operations – including access to renewable energy, competitive energy prices, available land for expansion, and a growing collaboration between businesses, research institutions, educational organizations and innovation support actors. Together, these factors create strong opportunities to develop, test and scale new solutions for sustainable food production.
GreenV will contribute expertise in engineering, greenhouse design, technical systems, construction and commissioning, while Agtira will be responsible for cultivation, production, sales and customer relations.
The partnership supports Agtira’s long-term strategy to strengthen Swedish production of fresh vegetables and meet the growing demand for locally produced food. Initially, the focus will be on cucumber cultivation, where the company is already the market leader in Sweden.
– To meet the growing demand for Swedish-produced vegetables, we need to be able to expand rapidly while maintaining a high level of technical quality. GreenV is one of Europe’s most experienced providers of modern greenhouse solutions, and we see significant opportunities in developing the next generation of cultivation facilities in Sweden together, says Joakim Linneros, CEO of Agtira.
The parties will now begin a joint process to evaluate the technical, commercial and financial conditions for the first projects.
What is a Food Valley?
A Food Valley is a geographic area where companies, research institutions, educational organizations and public sector actors collaborate to develop the future of food production.
By bringing together expertise, innovation, investment and entrepreneurship in one place, a Food Valley creates opportunities for new businesses, technological development and sustainable solutions across the entire food value chain – from production and processing to distribution and consumption.
The term is used internationally to describe strong clusters within the food sector.
