Swedish cleantech company Liquid Wind is taking major steps toward a fossil-free future with two new electrofuel facilities under development in Örnsköldsvik and Sundsvall. Both projects mark important milestones – for the company, for Västernorrland’s green industrial landscape, and for the global transition to sustainable shipping.
– Together with Övik Energi, we’re developing a facility in Örnsköldsvik. It’s looking very positive – overall, things are going really well, says Jonas Alin, Project Director at Liquid Wind.
– The project in Sundsvall received its environmental permit in May last year, and the process is progressing smoothly together with our partner Sundsvall Energi.
Liquid Wind is a Swedish cleantech company developing facilities for the production of e-methanol, a climate-neutral marine fuel based on renewable electricity, carbon dioxide, and water. Both facilities in Västernorrland are key parts of Liquid Wind’s growth strategy, and Alin sees the region as a natural location for long-term investment. But it’s not only the projects he highlights – it’s the broader development of the region as well.
– I’m truly impressed by what’s happening here. My family and I recently moved up from Stockholm, and I’m amazed by the level of activity – there’s always something going on. Industry days, trade fairs, new collaborations… great things are happening everywhere, on all levels. It’s a powerful development, says Jonas Alin.
Industrial Development at the Forefront
It’s no coincidence that companies like Liquid Wind choose to invest here. Västernorrland has proven that it not only has the right conditions but also the determination and capability to help lead the global transition.
According to a new socioeconomic analysis, SEK 150 billion is expected to be invested in Västernorrland by 2030, primarily linked to green industry and the energy transition. When Jonas Alin reflects on his experience of the region, he does so with a clear sense of optimism for the future:
– The power truly exists here. It’s not just a slogan – it’s something you can feel every day.
