Mid Sweden University is investing €1.6 million in a new AI lab in Sundsvall. The facility will provide powerful local computing resources for Västernorrland and open new opportunities for companies looking to expand their use of AI.
The new DigiLab will be proprietary to Miun, the Mid Sweden University, and a valuable complement to national and international computing resources. All hardware – from CPU:s to graphic processors and data storage units – are fully contained in the local Miun infrastructure, creating a safe space for exploring new ideas and applications.
– It means we are in complete control of the data. In addition, we don’t have to queue for the national computing resources, which means less waiting and shorter development cycles, says Mattias O’Nils, professor at Mid Sweden University and project manager.
DigiLab will be put to work in the new Miun courses AI Automation and Applied AI, starting this autumn, which are expected to build future competence in the region.
In addition to education and research, the lab will be available for collaborating companies looking into new AI applications.
– Collaboration means that we have a shared challenge, problems that have not been solved, where research can pave the way for new possibilites, says Mattias O’Nils.
Many of today’s collaborating companies are in manufacturing industries, infrastructure and logistics. For public affairs, Sundsvall and Mid Sweden University is well-known as a centre for GovTech research and development.
– Understanding and implementing the vast possibilites of AI is a high priority for almost every company. This investment at Mittuniversitet provides exciting R&D opportunities and adds to an already strong digitalization cluster with both public and private actors here in Västernorrland, says Magnus Viström, Director of Investment at High Coast Invest.
