The region of Västernorrland is strengthening its position within applied AI, GovTech and digital innovation through a new cross-sector initiative bringing together business, academia and the public sector.
The municipality of Sundsvall has launched Sweden’s first local AI Commission — a strategic initiative designed to accelerate regional development within artificial intelligence while creating stronger conditions for investment, innovation and business growth.
The initiative reflects a broader transformation already taking place in the region. Västernorrland has long been home to advanced digital infrastructure, public sector innovation, data-driven industries and a growing concentration of technology-focused companies. Combined with strong collaboration between industry, academia and government, this has created an environment where new technologies can move faster from development to real-world application.
As AI rapidly reshapes industries worldwide, regions capable of combining technological expertise, implementation capacity and access to talent are becoming increasingly attractive for companies looking to scale and innovate.
– Sundsvall is already at the forefront nationally within GovTech and applied AI. Strong initiatives are taking place across business, academia and the public sector, and now we are bringing that momentum together in a more coordinated effort, says Olivia Åsberg, Head of Business Development at Sundsvall Municipality.
The AI Commission will focus on identifying strategic opportunities that can strengthen the region’s long-term competitiveness within AI, cybersecurity and digital transformation. Key priorities include increasing AI adoption in existing industries, attracting new investments and competencies, strengthening digital infrastructure and creating better growth conditions for startups and scaleups developing AI-driven solutions.
The initiative brings together representatives from companies, research environments, innovation organisations and public authorities, including BizMaker, Bron Innovation, Mid Sweden University and GDM.
– For us, it is important to strengthen our ability to support companies throughout the entire AI journey — from trend analysis and tools to testbeds and concrete implementation. This initiative creates new opportunities to do that together with more partners, says Matts Nyman, CEO of BizMaker, the regional innovation platform.
The commission’s work will continue throughout 2026 and result in a regional roadmap for continued AI and GovTech development.
For international companies looking for a highly collaborative environment with strong digital capabilities, access to research and technical expertise, and close connections between industry and the public sector, the region of Västernorrland is emerging as a compelling location for the next generation of AI-driven innovation.
