World’s leading forest bioeconomy researchers gather in Västernorrland

Mid Sweden University

In August 2025, Sundsvall will become the focal point for the world’s foremost experts, innovators and companies working with bio-based materials. The 9th EPNOE International Polysaccharide Conference will bring together around 330 participants from across the globe to exchange knowledge, forge partnerships and accelerate the development of sustainable materials to replace plastics and fossil-based resources.

A global challenge driving urgent change

Plastics pollution, climate change and the need to decarbonise industry have created a pressing demand for alternatives to fossil-based materials. Forests offer a renewable resource — but unlocking their full potential requires more than world-class research. It demands a seamless collaboration between academia, industry and investors. This is where Västernorrland stands out.

A region built for bioeconomy growth

That Mid Sweden University, through its research centre FSCN, is hosting this prestigious global conference is clear recognition of the region’s internationally acknowledged expertise in forest bioeconomy and materials science. Västernorrland combines:

  • World-leading research environments in cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin.
  • Strong industrial clusters in forestry, advanced manufacturing and green tech.
  • Access to raw material and established infrastructure for scaling production.
  • Innovation ecosystems connecting startups, SMEs and global companies.

Opening doors for collaboration and investment

High Coast Invest will be on site to present Västernorrland’s position and potential in the bioeconomy. The region offers a complete ecosystem — from raw material to finished product — where companies can develop, test and commercialise their innovations in close collaboration with researchers and industry leaders. With available land, green energy and strong infrastructure, the region provides the perfect conditions for companies to establish, scale and thrive in a sustainable way.

– Västernorrland offers the entire value chain from forest to finished product. Here, companies can accelerate their innovation journey, tap into cutting-edge research and connect with industrial partners ready to scale. EPNOE 2025 is a unique opportunity for international actors to experience our region’s potential first-hand, says Magnus Viström, Director of Investment, High Coast Invest.

Creating opportunities for global business

For the first time, EPNOE will feature dedicated exhibition and pitching sessions for SMEs and startups in the bioeconomy sector, opening doors for collaboration with leading researchers, major industry players and potential investors. This is where new partnerships, market entries and technological breakthroughs can take shape — and where Västernorrland will demonstrate its readiness for global business.
